In 1970, at 19 years of age he joined other enterprising young college students at the American Dream Co-Op and began doing instrument repairs and building banjos. This co-op would become the birth place of at least four now world renowned instrument manufacturers - a true tribute to the concept of the American dream!

Our finishes are of depth and clarity rarely found in wood finishing, they are not merely cosmetic, but are an integral part of the guitar's sonic signature. Using a specially formulated guitar lacquer, we build the finish up over a period of more than a week carefully sanding in between coats to keep the finish thin and flat. Our colors are custom mixed in our paint shop, and applied with an airbrush in layers. This layering technique is what makes the Hamer sunbursts the most envied finishes.

Started in 1999, Michael Kelly Guitars has always taken a unique path. The focus has always been to start with sound and top it off with a bold, boutique-inspired appearance. When Michael Kelly launched, we, in fact, only offered mandolins and acoustic basses. These two markets had been under served and consumers could not buy a great sounding instrument without breaking the bank. The Michael Kelly Dragonfly collection of both acoustic basses and mandolins quickly became popular and hard to get.

For nearly 50 years, our manufacturing facility in New Hartford, Conn., has functioned as the mind, heart and soul of the Ovation brand. It is here that our historic legacy culminates in our USA Ovation line.
